For more than a year now, a bloody war has been raging in Ukraine, in which heroic Ukraine is defending itself against the inhuman aggressor state, Russia. Since the first day of the war Riga 1st Distance Learning Secondary School has been organising the social campaign "Learn and Donate for Ukraine" ("Mācies un ziedo Ukrainai"), in which students and teachers are invited to donate to support Ukrainian refugees. Since the start of the campaign, by actively learning and donating motivation points, students and teachers, together with the school, have provided support amounting now to 3000 euros.

Following the tragic events in Ukraine, where millions of people have already suffered as a result of Russian aggression, forcing them to leave their homes and seek refuge in other countries, including Latvia, it is almost impossible to remain indifferent. Looking for ways to help support Ukraine, Riga 1st Distance Learning Secondary School has launched the social campaign "Learn and Donate for Ukraine", in which both students and teachers are invited to take part.
The campaign is based on the school’s motivation programme “Learn and Earn” (“Mācies un pelni”), which was created to boost distance learners’ motivation to achieve their learning goals and to activate the conditions for good practice in responsible and active learning in distance education. Within the motivation programme, students and teachers receive motivation points for learning and teaching, which can be exchanged for souvenirs and various items, such as cinema tickets, mugs with the school logo and even a laptop.
The motivation programme “Learn and Earn” has been running successfully for several years, but, following the events in Ukraine, the idea arose that it could be used to give students and teachers the opportunity to support Ukraine and donate the points they have earned with their knowledge to those who need it most right now.
"It does not matter whether it is one kind word, five euros or some other useful household item – in the current situation, everything is needed both by Ukraine and by Ukrainians, especially now that it is absolutely clear that Russia’s aggression will not subside and many millions of Ukrainians are suffering, and will suffer for a long time to come, from the consequences caused by their neighbouring country. These are not only destroyed buildings, homes, schools and hospitals. These are thousands of lives lost, the lives of parents, children, friends and other loved ones that have been completely shattered and lost. And we must be strong and supportive in order to provide all the help needed at this difficult time."
This is how school principal Gita Vāvere describes the social campaign "Learn and Donate for Ukraine".
"I want to say a huge THANK YOU to every one of our students and teachers who do not remain indifferent at this time and continue to support Ukraine and Ukrainians. We will stand together to the end and do everything we can to provide all the support needed, and we also call on others not to stop and to continue their good deeds. We will also keep helping, and during the summer, too, students and teachers are invited to study and keep donating their motivation points – as soon as we have reached the required number of points, we will donate the next 1000 euros to the people of Ukraine."
Every year, students and teachers earn more than 1 million points within the motivation programme “Learn and Earn”.
